Mason Long

Mason Long, the bestest boy. These posts never get easier, but I feel it’s always important to share how much dogs mean to us and change our lives for the better. We had to say goodbye to our sweet Mason. I’m not sure where to begin with expressing how much he meant to our family. Mason came to us as our first rescue dog. I still remember his sweet face on the adopt me flyer. He had quite a rough start to his life, but man did he hit the jackpot the day he came home to us. Mason lived a long full, happy 14 years. He was with us during our post college years, our engagement, our wedding, our first home, and our two kids and the days they both came home from the hospital. He was also there for us during tough times - the loss of Buckeye & Woody, a loyal and best friend to Justin during his cancer treatment, a constant companion for all the sad, tough, happy moments in life. Mason, also known as Cece to Izzy, loved Izzy and Brooke so much. We always joked that the little hearing loss that he had came at the perfect time with a toddler and baby in the house :) And I know your puppy sister, Piper, drove you a little crazy with always wanting to play, zooming around and trying to eat almost every meal of yours, but man did she love you! She enjoyed treats, birthdays with you and zooming around the yard, while you watched and told her how nuts she is :) You have been her buddy since the day she came home and she misses you so much. This is her first time alone, so I hope you can help her through it. While Covid was horrible in so many ways, it allowed us to work from home the past few years and have ‘take your dog to work day’ everyday! For the past almost 3 years, you have laid by our desks every day. I know tomorrow will be a lot lonelier without you next to us while we work. Your dad misses you beyond words. You were his best buddy and pill buddy! He’ll miss his walks with you. An act of love can’t be measured, but someone who truly loves you would sleep on the couch for almost three years just so you weren’t alone and always made sure you got to go out as many times as you needed during the night. And I’ll continue to tell him to keep it down for you when he’s watching Buckeye football :) As for me, I don’t know how I’ll get through each day without you. Thank you for being glued to my side all these years and loving me every single day. I don’t think all people know how much a love of a dog makes you happy, I’m glad I know. As I looked back through the millions of pictures on my phone, I realized I loved to take photos of him asleep because he just always looked at peace and comfy and happy. He loved to lay out in the middle of the yard in the sunshine too. I called him the sunshine kid :) It was really tough for Mason these last few years, but he was a fighter and I always admired his strength and will. And as I sit here on the couch looking at his empty bed, we know he’s no longer in pain and he’s once again at peace and comfy and happy. We miss you more than words can say Mason! I hope you’re running around with Buckeye & Woody and laying in the sunshine. Love you sweet boy
